Lotus: A Classic Returns to America
By James Grahame
Britain has long been known for innovative and unusual automobiles. It's something to do with driving on the left side of the road, I suspect. Because I grew up in the UK, I am a dedicated -- and hopelessly irrational -- fan of British sports cars. I became a lifelong Lotus enthusiast the moment my young eyes saw James Bond driving a Lotus Esprit in The Spy Who Loved Me.
After an absence of more than a decade, Lotus Cars recently launched a new invasion of the North American market. Their secret weapon? The Elise. She weighs under 2000 lbs, packs a 190 HP Toyota 4-cylinder engine and is capable of 0-60 in less than five seconds. Her top speed is 150 mph, so be careful to stay on the ground. An automatic transmission is definitely not an option.
The best part? The Elise is almost affordable -- starting at approximately $40,000. Options include a hardtop and a touring pack which includes power windows and an upgraded sound system.
