Russian Night Vision
By James Grahame
Near as I can tell, the best thing about the breakup of the Soviet Union is the amazing amount of pseudo-military technology that is now manufactured for export. Take night vision scopes, for instance. In the real world these things have limited uses. Rugift lists military, law enforcement, hunting, and "entertainment." I'll leave their last suggestion to your imagination.
Prices range from $159 for a "Generation 1" model (passive infra-red), all the way up to several thousand bucks for a state-of-the-art Generation 2+ unit (improved resolution and sensitivity). The best of these scopes enable you to see a person standing over 180m (200 yd) away on an overcast moonless night. Now if only the Russians would perfect X-Ray goggles.
