Nakamichi System One Compact Stereo
By bohus

It's hard today to buy an actual stereo today. Consumers have been shuffled to all-in-one compact units; often they sound like the guts of a $40 boom box stuffed into a new case with some wood laminate stickers. Before today's audio ghetto of bookshelf stereos, there was a time when a mini-system (miniaturization of any kind, really) was a sign of sophistication and expense.
The Nakamichi Compact Receiver 1 was something really revolutionary in the 80's. Along with the imaginatively named CD Cassette Player 1 and custom tailored speakers, this system still packs a punch. Each component is only about a foot wide and two inches high, but it's got everything you might need; real inputs and outputs, concealed CD player, concealed auto-reverse tape deck, even connectors for a tape loop so that a clever person can hook up an EQ to the whole affair!
The style and color of the buttons betray the 80's origin of this unit, but I still like it. Both units have a neoprenish charcoal grey finish instead of dull black or the current horror - matte silver. I bought this set with speakers at a thrift some years back with the idea of taking advantage of its small footprint to put a big sound in the smallest room in our apartment, which will finally happen in the next week or two. I'll let you know.
If any of you have a copy of the manual or an idea on where I can get the remote, drop me a line in the comments section.
