The Dark Crystal 25th Anniversary Edition
By James Grahame
It's been a quarter century since Gelflings first graced the screen.
Jim Henson's epic tale of good vs. evil stunned me as a kid, and it still impresses me today. It was a radical departure for Henson and creative designer Brian Froud. Gone was the lighthearted banter and primary colored characters who comforted us on The Muppet Show, replaced by a dark and foreboding world populated by light hearted Gelflings and evil (and ugly) Skekses. The film stood apart from most fantasy films because it offered a world without humans.
The new DVD features a top-notch HD transfer, with extras such as discarded work print scenes, a making-of documentary entitled "World of the Dark Crystal" and a set of interviews packaged as "Reflections of the Dark Crystal," which offer a modern perspective on this classic film. It's a pity Jim Henson isn't around to offer his thoughts.
