Airstream Basecamp Tent-Trailer Hybrid
By James Grahame
Airstream has produced space cruiser-like aluminum camping trailers for more than 75 years. Airstreams are known for their design, comfort and substantial size (this is the company that manufactures the Land Yacht motorhome, after all). Their new Basecamp model changes all that. It's still stylish and comfortable, but incorporates a clever lightweight tent-trailer design that can be towed by today's smaller vehicles.
The company designed the Basecamp in cooperation with Nissan Design America and Kelly. It includes an innovative wrap-around front window that make this little home away from home look like it's wearing shades. The trailer measures only 16 ft 2-inches in length, but still manages to incorporate two bed/seating areas along with a sink, cooktop and work area. The list price is anticipated to be under $20,000.
