Twike Human-Electric Hybrid Vehicle: 550 mpg
By James Grahame
This German 'Human-Electric Hybrid' sounds like some sort of cyborg transportation device. In reality, the name refers to a $15,000 electrically powered trike that includes pedals to add some optional
person power to the motor. Its phenomenally low energy consumption is equivalent to getting about 550 miles per gallon of gasoline.
The Twike's digital power electronics give you a range of about 55 miles (80 km) on a single charge. The NiCd battery pack can be quickly recharged, offering a range of up to 110 miles per day. The vehicle's maximum speed is an impressive 55 mph (100 kph). You don't have to do away with creature comforts, either. The Twike offers cozy side-by-side seating and a jet fighter styled cockpit to keep you out of the elements.
There are quite a few Twikes cruising around Europe, and they're also imported into the United States. A notice on their website indicates that they're chasing Canadian certification as well. If the Twike appeals, be sure to check out the similarly styled (but smaller) Aerorider.
