Handmade Classic: Morgan Motor Company Roadster
By James Grahame
The Morgan Motor Company, founded in 1910, holds the distinction of being one of the oldest auto manufacturers in existence. Their Pickersleigh Road Factory (Malvern, Worcestershire) opened in 1918 and remains the heart of their operation today.
Their newest model - the Morgan Roadster (starting at £30,800 + VAT) - was released in 2004, although new designs are on the drawing board. The Roadster is an updated version of their older Plus 8. Although it looks like it escaped from the 1950s, the Roadster features a modern Ford V6 3.0L powerplant with 220 HP on tap. It'll go from 0-100 km/h in under 5 seconds, with a top speed of 215 km/h (134 mph). Standard colours are Royal Ivory, Corsa Red, Indigo Blue, Black and Connaught Green, although you can select from any standard ICI auto paint color. You can even opt for a 4-seater version so friends, offspring, and pet monkeys can enjoy the ride.
It the Roadster isn't distinguished enough for you, consider their upcoming AeroMax Coupe. Only 100 of these stunning V8-powered machines with laminated ash frame will be manufactured, starting in 2008. They will offer the lightest V8 platform in the world, which should result in stunning retro-styled performance. Prices start at £94,000 plus VAT.
