Few people have heard of it, yet many consider John Blankenbaker's KENBAK-1 to be the first commercial personal computer.

Gakken Theremin: Ghostly Music Now Within Arm's Reach

Everything you need to know.

Everyone should own at least one Gakken Otona no Kagaku adult electronic kit. Their amazingly affordable Theremin Premium was released late last year. Created by Russian inventor Leon Theremin in the 1920s, this graceful electronic instrument is played by waving your hands in the air beside its two antennae to control pitch and volume.

Gakken's little Theremin is sold exclusively in Japan, but there are usually a handful on eBay for less than $100. It weighs only 345g and operates on 4 x AA batteries. Although the manual is written in Japanese, the simple front panel controls are conveniently labeled in English and should only take a few moments to figure out. As icing on the cake, a built-in speaker and mic stand bracket open up a world of embarrassing public performance opportunities.
