I just discovered that summer is a great time to go watch shopping -- there are a few dozen Seiko 5 models on Amazon selling for around $60, shipping included. That's an absolute bargain for a brand name watch with automatic 21 jewel movement and day/date display.
Keep in mind that a mechanical watch won't be as accurate as an electronic quartz model and you'll find yourself resetting the time every now and then to stay in sync with the rest of the world. However, the precision movement will provide years of battery-free timekeeping and can be surprisingly accurate if you're willing to take the time (hah!) to properly adjust the regulation.
